That's me in the picture. I played bass at a number of gigs with Hookah when we all (the original members, plus myself and Dan and Nate Mesnard) help create the band and scene in the spring of 1991.
To make a long story short, Cliff was "slow" getting to the Melkweg that night, and Dave nominated me to play 5 minutes before showtime. At the time, I hadn't played with my friends on stage in almost 9 years, as I've been living in Europe.
We opened with "Under Full Sail", a song I played with the band in 91-92 and know well, and then one of Ed's songs (can't remember off the top of my head) that I had to improvise on reading the chord changes of a sheet off notebook paper. Cliff arrived during the 2nd number, and took over for me to finish out the set and show. It was probably the most stressful, yet fun experience in my 20+ years of playing music. I've since sat in again on UFS at The House of Blues in Cleveland.
The show must go on, and it did. When your brothers ask you to step onstage, you better be ready to heed the call. As far as me playing his bass: Cliff played my bass with Hookah for years (the green fretless 4 string for those of you who remember), so I'm sure he was/is fine with it.
Easy now.
Peace.
